In India, different types of Kheer are prepared like Sabudana Kheer, Sevai Kheer, Rice Kheer, and Suji Kheer, But the most popular kheer is Rice Kheer. And we are also talking about the rice kheer recipe. Which is prepared on all occasions and is liked by everyone.

Rice Kheer is a traditional Indian dessert made from rice, milk, and sugar. Rice Kheer is typically made with a sweetener such as sugar or jaggery, but you may choose to sweeten the dish with honey also. You may also add flavor to the dish by adding nuts, cardamom, and saffron during the cooking. This is a sweet dish that is traditionally served on special occasions like weddings and festivals like Diwali, Hartalika Teej, etc. It can also include other ingredients, such as nuts or fruits. It is also served as an offering to the gods during religious ceremonies. In some parts of India, it is served with ghee.


  • 1/2 cup short grain brown rice 
  • 3 cups of full-fat milk 
  • 1/4 cup of water 
  • 1/4 tsp saffron threads
  • 3 tbsp sugar 
  • 1 cup almonds, soaked overnight in water (for extra creaminess)
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom powder

Tips to make perfect Rice Kheer

The process of making Rice Kheer is fairly simple.

  • First of all, use short grain rice to make this dessert as it gives a good texture to the dish.
  • You can also use less water while cooking the rice so that it is slightly dry.
  • Also, make sure to boil the milk before making the dessert.
  • Cooking this dessert over low heat for a long time will produce a rich and creamy consistency in the dish.
  • Soaking almonds overnight ensures that they are soft and easy to blend with the other ingredients.
  • You can also add a little sugar to the milk before cooking it to give the kheer a sweet and creamy texture.
  • If you like, you can serve the kheer with slivered almonds on top for extra crunch.
  • You can garnish the kheer with flaked pistachios as well, which adds an extra dimension of flavor.
  • The almond and saffron kheer has a distinctive yellow color from the saffron strands that are blended into the mixture.
  • The taste of the kheer is sweet and buttery, with a nutty flavor from the almonds. The cardamom adds another layer to the flavor.
  • This is one of my favorite recipes because it is very easy to make. It also tastes great and looks quite presentable, making it perfect for dinner parties or other special occasions. 

How to make Rice Kheer

  • Add the rinsed rice to a container along with 2 cups of water and the saffron threads. 
  • Let it boil, then cover and lower the heat to a simmer. 
  • Cook until the rice is soft and most of the liquid has been absorbed for about 30 minutes. 
  • Stir in the sugar, and cardamom, and cook for another 5 minutes. 
  • Remove from the heat and set aside to cool slightly. 
  • Transfer the mixture to a blender and blend until smooth. 
  • Return the blended mixture along with the full-fat milk and stir to mix. 
  • Keep it on the gas to cook on a low flame.
  • Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. 
  • Kheer would be ready in around 40 minutes.
